Manufacturing Process

Xuan Paper's production involves a complex and labor-intensive process, requiring over 100 steps and taking up to three years to complete. Key steps include:

  • Material Preparation: The primary materials are Qingtan bark and Shatian rice straw, which are collected and processed through soaking, pounding, bleaching, steaming, and other preparations.

  • Paper Pulp Making: The prepared materials are turned into paper pulp.

  • Sheet Forming: Using a paper mold (or paper screen), the pulp is evenly spread and lifted out to form a sheet, a process that requires skill and precision.

  • Drying: The wet sheets are dried either under the sun or over a heated surface lined with pine needles.

  • Finishing: The dried sheets are trimmed, inspected, and packaged.

Advantages

  • Texture and Appearance: Xuan Paper is characterized by its pure white color, fine texture, softness, and strength. It is smooth without being slippery and has a natural光泽.

  • Ink Absorption: The paper's ability to absorb ink evenly and retain its clarity makes it ideal for calligraphy and painting, allowing for intricate brushstrokes and vibrant colors.

  • Durability: Xuan Paper is highly resistant to decay, insects, and aging, earning it the nickname "Paper with a Thousand-Year Lifespan." It preserves calligraphy and paintings for generations.

  • Cultural Significance: As a carrier of Chinese culture, Xuan Paper has been used to create numerous works of art and literature, contributing to the preservation of traditional Chinese aesthetics and wisdom.
