Overview
The Potala Palace, located on the Red Hill in the center of Lhasa City, Tibet Autonomous Region, China, is a comprehensive building integrating administrative, religious, and political affairs. It was originally built in the 7th century by Songtsen Gampo, the ruler of the Tubo Dynasty, to marry Princess Chizun and Princess Wencheng. Later, after the decline of the Tubo Dynasty, it was gradually destroyed. In the 17th century, the Fifth Dalai Lama rebuilt the magnificent palace on the site of the old Red Hill Palace, which became the winter residence of successive Dalai Lamas and the venue for major religious and political ceremonies.
